Establishing Yourself as a Thought Leader Through Social Media

The chances are, if you’re a recruitment leader, you’d quite like to be known as a thought leader on your social media platforms and as the go-to person in your field, there are many benefits to being regarded as such.

The chances are, if you’re a recruitment leader, you’d quite like to be known as a thought leader on your social media platforms. As the go-to person in your field, there are many benefits to being regarded as such and LinkedIn is undoubtedly where your profile should shine.

Although your profile might not be at the top of its game, there are ways you can begin to improve the way it comes across to an outside perspective. However, before you start on those, you need to get the basics right.

1 – Starting Right

Firstly, your brand needs to be at the heart of your profile and from a quick glance, it should be screaming that you know what you’re talking about. Before you can start creating your own engaging content, you’ll need to make sure your profile photo, header, and headline are intriguing and point towards your intended message (what is it that you want to be known for?). What is your specialism or skill set? According to LinkedIn, a complete profile is forty times more likely to appear once it is completed. Whilst you may have a completed profile, it still needs to look the part. You should summarise your experience, skills, and most importantly, have an intriguing headline.

2 – Engagement

After you’ve successfully curated your profile and are happy with the way it looks, you can move on to getting more involved. Some of you may already be at this step, but are struggling to become more engaging – we’ll get to how we can solve that.

To become the ideal thought leader, you need to establish a credible voice and one where you sound confident with what you’re talking about. You should be up to date with the latest trends and topics – look what others are sharing and become engaged. At this point, you don’t even need to be creating your own content, but instead, you should be sharing one well-informed piece a day and engaging in the comments. You can also link to any eBooks or articles you’ve found really interesting and offer your own view on those (or any you’ve published!).

So, you’ve got into the routine of sharing and engaging, but you need to be making valuable connections from the industry. Engage with these connections and reply to their comments on similar articles; join groups and cultivate your contacts. If you can’t find a group that’s specific to what you want, make one! The more specific and focused you are, the better, as you want to become a leader known for a particular reason. Unless you’ve established yourself as a credible voice, you cannot become an established thought leader.

3- Find Your Own Voice

Once you’ve gained some confidence in shaping your own voice through comments and replies to posted articles, you can begin to create your own, if you haven’t already. You can wait until you’ve made some valuable contacts, or you can do this from the get go (don’t forget to include a nice visual every once in a while too!).

If you need some help, take a look at the recent statistical trends and vacancy data as well as what industry leaders are discussing. From here you should be able to form your own opinion on the topic. Do you agree or disagree? What would you recommend to clients and businesses? Once you have this, if it’s a short one, post it to your page, or if it’s a bit longer, through a dedicated blog.

4 – Persistence

When you have completed these steps, you’re on your way to becoming a recruitment thought leader! It does take time. It does take persistence, but that’s part and parcel of what it means to be one. Keep up to date and persist with your own views and posts. Attempt to be consistent in your updates and shape your own viewpoint around how you’d like to be viewed. Hopefully, with these steps, you’ll be on well on your way to becoming the next engaging thought leader in recruitment.
